Over the last few months, I’ve shared different tips to help you get your garage organized (here & here).  Today I’m sharing the third part of my garage organization series by showing you how to organize your freezer.  I had help with the planning stages this time around – from Post-it Brand.  I used the new Post-it Brand A World of Color collections, a new line of Post-it® Notes for 2015 featuring exciting color palettes inspired by vibrant cities from around the world. Continue reading to see how I planned & implemented this fun home organization project.

THE PLAN:

My plan was to create an organized and visually appealing freezer that would be functional for the entire family.  With the help of the Post-it Brand A World of Color collections,  I was easily able to accomplish this.

ABOUT Post-it Brand:

For this project, I chose the Post-it Brand A World of Color collections to help me plan out where the food categories would go inside the freezer.  The collections are inspired by cities from around the world.

  • RIO DE JANEIRO Collection:  This collection portrays the expressive and dramatic colors that celebrate this Brazilian metropolis.  It’s available in 3×3, 4×4, 4×6 Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, and 3×3 Pop-up Notes.
  • BORA BORA Collection:  This collection creates a refreshing palette that feels like an escape to paradise.  It’s available in 3×3, 4×4, 4×6 Post-it Recycled Super Sticky Notes, and 3×3 Pop-up Notes.

GATHER MATERIALS:

  • Post-it® Notes   Use a set or two of the Post-it Brand World of Color Notes to plan out your freezer category placement.  You will also need a marker or pen.
  • BINS  Once you figure out how many categories you will need,  it’s time to gather up your supplies.  You will need at least one bin for each category.  You can find them just about anywhere these days.  I used inexpensive plastic bins.
  • LABELER  If you want to be super organized, you can label each bin with the food category name.  This helps other family members put food away correctly after you go grocery shopping.

FREEZER CATEGORIES:  After I gathered up my materials, the first thing I did was figure out where everything was going to go.  I used the new Post-it ® Notes from the World of Color collections to lay out my freezer organization on the door.  I used a different color note to represent each food category.

  • Bread
  • Meat (Beef, chicken, sausage, bacon)
  • Snacks
  • Cheese
  • Sweets
  • Veggies
  • Nuts
  • Fruit
  • Bananas
  • Bulk

LABEL:  Once I mapped out the categories, I labeled the bins.

STOCK THE FREEZER:  After I finished labeling, I went grocery shopping and stocked up my freezer.

Wow! That looks incredible. I do have one question. What brand bins did you use? I am getting ready to do my freezer and those would be perfect. Any help would be appreciated. 🙂

  2. Corrie says:

I would be eternally grateful for a post on how to organize the freezer of a french door refrigerator. We just built a new house and everyone told us to go with this option because they loved it. We hate the freezer! Lol. It’s so hard to find anything. We don’t have a deep freezer (we’ll get one eventually) and we are a family of four. Surely others must be in the same boat?

  3. Bennie says:

I’m a single gal with just the one fridge and freezer above it. Yes, it is a bit of a mess. I tend to make pots of soups and casseroles and stockpile a few meals for weeks ahead so that I don’t spend my entire weekend cooking for the work week. I should probably dig into the back for some frozen entrees that I’ve forgotten about. It’s hard to organize a small freezer (above the fridge). And the thought of tossing out food bothers me but I suppose if it’s old it really should go.

  4. Gail says:

Do you use a particular machine to freeze your chicken in those plastic bags? one that seals it for you? if so what is it called and where did you purchase? I try to use ziplocs and they just don’t work well

  5. Sonya Imbsen says:

oh my goodness, you must have read my mind last night, I was googling freezer organization. And I love yours, but mine is super tiny a side by side and I buy in bulk at Costco. Help!

  6. Dream Mom says:

Oh, your freezer (and garage) look just beautiful! I like the part about making everything visually appealing. For my freezer, I just keep it simple. I buy groceries for the week and don’t stock my freezer/refrigerator. That way, everything is fresh-at the beginning of the week, it’s full and the end of the week it’s empty. This makes it easier to clean, no food is wasted and I feel like we are eating fresher food (I tend to buy mostly fresh fruits/vegetables.) There are just two people in my family so I understand that larger families may need a different plan and/or a second freezer. Of course, if there is a snowstorm or something, I’ll buy more than a week’s worth of groceries. In my refrigerator, I keep plastic bins (shoebox size) to separate the fruits and vegetables and glass jars for most everything else. Good tips as always.

  7. Jane says:

Loved these ideas, but do you have any suggestions for a chest style freezer

  8. Audrey says:

I really like the bins used in the freezer, especially the flower cut out ones. I didn’t see a brand or retailer listed. Could you tell us where to find these?

    • Toni says:

Im not sure what the brand is. Its from tj maxx 🙂

      • jenny says:

Toni, are the specifically made for the freezer, or are they just storage bins? I only ask because I was wondering if you use regular plastic bins if they crack over time from being in the cold freezer…

  9. Katlin S. says:

Any tips on a deep freezer? Those things are plum impossible!

  10. Carol Baldwin says:

This looks great so organized! I am curious as to what kind of bags you used to freeze the veggies and fruit. They look vacuum sealed do you have a recommendation for specific vacuum seal food storage bag system? Thank you

  11. Jessica says:

That is one lovely freezer! We don’t have one that big, but this post has given me some ideas for organizing my smaller one! Thanks Toni! =)

  12. Ramona George says:

How we’ll have the bins held up in the freezer? I have a chest freezer and have to move bins around and the handles and edges break because they are so cold. Cardboard boxes work but aren’t pretty and get too heavy sometimes. Just wondering if you have any thoughts?

  13. dazywings says:

Your freezer looks great! It looks like my happy place! I loved the post-it layout-so pretty!

I’d love some tips for those of us who grow our own foods to freeze and how to best organize a freezer that contains a years supply(50-60qt bags) of sweet corn, apple slices, sauce, juice, pie filling. chicken whole & parted (they don’t stand up like yours!) 🙂 Venison (think multiple sizes of packages from an entire(or half) animal deer/cow/pig, soups frozen in both mason and bags, and also make ahead freezer meals, etc. To me your freezer is great for weekly freezer items, but it doesn’t address long term storage freezer situations. Any ideas?

  14. I love how you used Post-it notes to map out your categories! What a great idea! 🙂 Your freezer looks amazing, now it’s time to get to mine!

  15. Amanda F says:

I am also wondering about a chest freezer and organizing with bins 🙂

  16. I love this. People are always so fearful of putting bins in the freezer, but this shows how they work perfectly and allow things to take up less space. I also love how you set up the frozen fruit section…I’ve been using a bin and putting it all in, but I’m still digging through when it’s time to make a smoothie.

  17. Bennie says:

Just a follow-up to my post above. I did as planned and cleaned out my freezer. OMG! I had some things in there for a few years that I even dated. Some homemade/leftover soups and casseroles and the basic frozen store bought foods. I didn’t even remember buying some! Now I can see what I have and will try to eat it all before I buy or stock up on any more frozen foods. Thanks for the kick in the butt! 😉

  18. Sarah Martina says:

Can you please share where your blue handled bins are from? Both the shallow (meat & fruit) and the deep (cheese, snacks, nuts & bananas) ones.

  19. Becky says:

Beautiful and inspiring! Thanks. This will be so helpful.

  20. I wish my freezers looked like this. Awesome!

  21. My freezer is most definitely in need of a massive makeover, I’ve got to get to work!

  22. Alen M. says:

Looks so tasty, I like the pink one. The label system comes handy in most situation. Great job!

  23. tamara says:

I was just wondering where you get the bags you have your fruit in? Thank you
