Hardwood Floor Care Routine

August 29, 2017

Hardwood floor care is a mundane task that most of us honestly don’t enjoy. However, it’s not that bad if you find the right products that will do the job “for you” and set a schedule that works around your busy life. It can actually be quite enjoyable. The less work I have to do, the better the outcome! Here are the products that have helped streamline my hardwood floor cleaning routine. There are affiliate links within this post.

DAILY FLOOR MAINTENANCE: With three animals and three kids, I have to maintain my floors on a daily basis. It cannot be ignored. After years of sweeping and vacuuming, I finally found a product that gave me some relief.

After reading all of the rave reviews about the POWERbot, I was finally able to get my hands on one. Samsung was generous and sent me one to review. I will say, I was apprehensive at first. My floors seemed pretty clean to begin with, however I was horrified to see how much dirt and pet hair the POWERbot picked up on the first pass. I thought my area rugs and floors were fairly clean. I was clearly mistaken. This machine is super powerful and gets the dirt out of every crevice.

My favorite part is the schedule. We have it set to run at 7pm every night (after dinner and when the kitchen is all cleaned). I love that the product allows for a flexible lifestyle. We can leave it and get on with our busy routines and not have to worry. Learn more about the Samsung POWERbot r7070 here. (Pictured below is the first pass around my house).

DAILY KITCHEN FLOOR ROUTINE:  Keeping the kitchen floors clean throughout the day is a daunting task. With all of the kitchen traffic and cooking throughout the day, it’s nearly impossible, however I found a miracle product that has helped me finally get a grasp on it. It’s my favorite purchase of 2017 (so far).  If you hate sweeping up crumbs in a dust pan and you don’t have a central vacuum system, this will be your new best friend. It’s a stationary vacuum canister that you sweep crumbs right into. No more need for a dust pan. It all gets sucked up into the canister. I keep one in my kitchen and I’m thinking about putting one close to the front door. Get the details about this amazing product here. (I was not sponsored by this company).

WEEKLY MOPPING ROUTINE: My mopping routine happens weekly (unless there are noticeable messes that need my attention sooner). I typically use a spray mop but I found a spin mop at TJ Maxx and wanted to try it out. It’s easy to use and I enjoy cleaning the floors with it! I wanted to share a product link with you, but I think it might be discontinued. Here is another popular spin mop that does the same job (with great reviews).

HARDWOOD FLOOR RECIPE:  To clean my finished hardwoods, I add one capful of Almond castile soap and 10 drops of pure lemon essential oil to the spin bucket filled with hot water.

You can find many other floor cleaning recipes and tips in my book “The Complete Book of Clean”.

Does the vacuum go over saddles into other rooms? Or stays within the 1 area?

    • Toni says:

I don’t have those but it does go up onto thicker carpet and all around the house. It works great! We have to remove the throw rugs after dinner so it doesn’t get stuck though.

Does your book have a kindle format?

I have a spin mop that I got at a Home and Garden Show (not sure the brand). LOVE IT. Works so good and does not leave the floor real wet!

  4. Tayra says:

Is the recipe safe for stranded bamboo floors??

  5. Traci says:

Love this post! No matter what I do my floors seem to streak after mopping. I’ve used multiple cleaning recipes and tried heavily reducing the ration of cleaner:water and nothing seems to help. Your floors look beautiful, any recommendations? Also, how long does it take the Samsung to go through a cleaning cycle? Thanks!

    • Toni says:

Follow my recommendations on this post and see how it turns out. The samsung runs for about 1.5 hours in my house.

I thought yu weren’t supposed to use water on hardwoods?

    • Toni says:

You can definitely use water on sealed hardwoods with a damp (not wet) mop. 😉 This mop is almost dry after spinning.

love cleaning my hardwood floors with DoTerra lemon and I put Lavender too and a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol makes it shinny. my mop doesn’t ring it out nice and dry. I love the norwex mop head too. Thanks for all your cleaning tips.

How much “stuff” does the POWERbot hold? I have held back on these auto sweepers because I worry they will get full right away because they are so small and not work 🙂

  9. Phil says:

This seems as relevant to softwood floors as to hardwood.

I am hoping you can give me some tips because this is a first for me. Our home flooded during Hurricane Harvey and we have a mess on our hands. We have two feet of sheetrock cut out of all rooms in the house and I am frantically cleaning and sanitizing as much as possible with work going on. Do you or any of your organizing friends have any tips for living in this type of chaos while construction is going on? I have piles of stuff on every available surface in every room of the house, including bathrooms! (It’s a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom, office, sunroom, etc, etc, huge house) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! OCD Mama is going crazy with this disorder!

Taking care of hardwood floor is very important. Nice post. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Toni I love your home & especially your hard wood floors. We are currently renovating our entire home *sigh! And I am having trouble deciding on hardwoods from just a small sample in the showroom. Did you have your floors installed? And if so can you give me the brand & color? I follow you on instagram & You Tube & drool over your beautiful floors (and everything else)
    Thanks so much, Debra ?

Hi Toni, thanks for these useful tips! I was wondering if you had to rinse the floor with clean water after you used castile soap and essential oils?

  14. Mary Gillespie says:

    Hi, Toni!

I was just wondering if you think this routine would work for tile floors, especially the mop and cleaner recipe? When we had our house built we couldn’t afford hardwood so we went with tile, and it is horrible to keep clean with 2 boys and 2 shedding dogs! Thank you!
