Homebuilding Week 3: The Pad & My Dream Book

October 16, 2017

We just finished up week 3 of our homebuilding journey. This week, they completed the building pad and the compaction test. The build is moving along smoothly (so far). I know there will be wrinkles down the road, but we are thankful for every good day and are enjoying the process.

They had to remove the top soil, in order to replace it with good compactible soil.

Around 30 loads were delivered and spread across the building pad.

It took the guys two days to spread and compact the soil. Once the soil was spread, they performed a compaction test to determine if the soil was ready for the foundation.

Next week, they will begin the footers.

I had several requests to share my homebuilding dream book. Here it is. I purchased it from Walmart. It’s a plain old sketch book. I pasted magazine photos and quotes, and wrote information down in it. It’s come in handy and I enjoy flipping through the pages to get ideas while building. I highly recommend creating one, if you’re on the homebuilding journey too.

Here is a video documenting week 3 of our build. I included the dream book for your enjoyment.

Thanks for joining me today. I will be back next week for another update! Have a great day.

Thanks for the post- it will be so interesting to watch your home take place. Not sure where you live, but here in the US Northeast (Boston area) almost all homes, even new builds have basements. So interesting that this is not the norm in the rest of the country! Wondering if you could discuss whether you had a choice for a basement or not and if you did why you chose not to have one?

We live near the beach so its not possible to have a basement. We are at sea level. If it rained, the basement would flood. So the norm here is no basement. There are no basements in this area at all.:) Great question!

What a neat idea thanks for sharing. I did a similar approach for my new kitchen just did not put it in a book
