Day #12 ~ Getting Organized Challenge (The Spice Cabinet)

January 14, 2011
Welcome to day 12!!!

We only have 9 more challenges left. How are you feeling? Does your house feel more organized?  Mine sure does.  Today we are going to be cleaning out and organizing our spices.  I have received a ton of emails requesting for this to be a part of the challenge.

If you are new to the challenge, click on the button below to see what it’s all about and join in!

Today my challenge for you is…

1. Take your before picture
2. Take everything out of your spice cabinet
3. Wipe it clean!
4. Go through all of the spices and look at dates.  There will be a lot of expired stuff in there!
5. Now grab your organizing baskets/bins and start catergorizing.
6.  If you have a label, you can use it here.
7.  Now put it all back, nice and neat and take your after picture.

Great Job! Come back and show us what you have done.

Here is my cabinet. There was a lot of expired stuff in here. I used the same bins as seen in my freezer.  For only a buck, I got a ton of them.

I categorized these into separate bins:

1.  Cooking spices
2. Baking spices
3. Grilling spices
4. Bulk spices
5. Baking
6. and a shelf for condiments & baking misc.

Labeling the tops of your spices makes it easier to find what you need. Time saver for sure!

  1. awesome! This spot always gets “grody” really quickly. I still have to work on my freezer!!

  2. Your cabinet is fantastic! I have a spice shelf in my pantry, so I took care of this on day #7. I do label the tops of my spices with what they are, but also with the expiration date so I don’t have to go hunting and can just see it when I’m grabbing for something!
I have a separate cabinet for baking though, and tackled that today instead. πŸ™‚
Thanks, Toni, for all the motivation and inspiration!!

  3. The cabinet is great, but I must say I am loving your mixer! The color is great!

love your cupboard and the blue baskets.

I’ve been commenting of a lot of the peoples blogs but forgot to comment on yours. Yours should be the first I comment on because if it wasnt for you, we wouldn’t have this great challenge. a big thank you!!

  5. Clean Mama says:

Love this, Toni! I do the Lazy Susans, but I really like your bin idea.

  6. I just found your blog today and am IN LOVE! Wow, what an awesome way to keep yourself and others motivated to clean and organize things! πŸ™‚

    I love it!

I love those cute pictures hanging beside your cabinets too, where did you find those?

I just found your blog and I am way to late to participate in your 21 Days challenge. But since I do FLYlady’s organization method, I have already gone through the spice cabinet. The good news is that it stays like that even months later. The only thing I have to do so far has been wiping off some spilled pepper an d change my brown bag lining. This post is from when I joined Amy’s APTuesday (still post there when I got a chance to work on my delinquents) and I blog about it. http://ourlives09.blogspot.com/2010/03/tackle-it-tuesday-spice-cabinet.html
P.S. I have enjoyed reading your blog, your blog looks very clean. I heard about Shaklee but it is neat to see it being used. πŸ™‚

  10. Becky says:

Oh…to label and label! I could do it all the time and love to see your labels! I’m even thinking of asking my hubby for a new fancy label maker for my 40th birthday! Great job…again, Toni!

Wow! You have a HUGE spice cabinet…maybe if I didn’t have so many dishes, mine could be that big too.

Anyway, my daughter is going to LOVE this challenge because it means she will get to use that Label Maker again…LOL.

Again, I am behind because I spent ALL day Wednesday doing my laundry room, which included paint. Sooo…catch up again this weekend. I know the whole point is one thing per day…but that doesn’t seem to be working out with my busy schedule – ha!

Thanks again for keeping me on track!

Beth, I got my wall decor at a garage sale for $1.00 each!! I have more cute ones by my table. Love them. I love garage sales toO!

  13. Michelle says:

Wow, I need to do that bin thing to my spice cupboard and drawer! I can’t tell you what happens every time any of the cooks (like 3 out of 5 of us cook) in my house are looking for a ‘certain’ ‘specific’ spice. Thanks for the inspiration!
