Cash envelope systems

January 12, 2012
You have all heard me talk about budgeting and using a cash only envelope system. I want to share the system I am currently using now.  Its the wallet system I found from A time for everything (an etsy shop).  Melissa is so talented and has created the cutest designed wallets ever.

Here is my wallet.  Its so pretty.

Our debt story

We decided back in November of 2009 that we were tired of being in debt.  We were tired of giving away our paychecks to creditors.  We had enough!  Until one day, I stumbled upon Dave Ramsey’s website and it changed our lives forever! We started financial peace university and changed our way of spending forever.  So now at the first of every month, I sit down and figure out what we “expect” to get paid and I create a budget on excel. EVERY MONTH its a new budget.  I adjust as I see fit. Some months we spend too much in groceries, or hardly spend any in gas… so I adjust.  I budget to a zero balance. That means every penny is spent and placed somewhere.  If my bills are all budgeted and monthly expenses are allotted, whatever is left goes into a savings acct (if we are not fully funded in our emergency fund).  We like to keep $2000 in our fund. If thats full, then the rest will be used to pay down the smallest bill that we owe.  And so on and so forth.  Thats called the debt snowball. We have about one more year before we are debt free (minus the house and now a new car that we just recently purchased). My car of 8 years finally died on me.   Once the bills are paid off, I will double up on my car payment, and finally the house. We are not perfect and sometimes fail, but we get back up and start a new day.

The categories I use for my envelope system are:

Gas ($80/pay – we dont drive far)
Groceries ($150/wk)
Entertainment ($100/wk)
School ($10/wk for misc. lunch, fees, etc. They usually pack.)
Medical ($100/pay for co pays, prescriptions, eyes, dental, etc. Whats left goes into savings.)

*I use my bank acct. to pay my bills through electronic bill pay.

I was just considering switching to a cash budget. This would work very well as the hubby tends to forget to let me know when he uses the debit card (I balance my checkbook to the penny!). πŸ™‚ This would be a great start….

My husband and I budget. I’m in charge of it and every night before I bed I enter in all the numbers. We have a $100/wk allowance for fun money and it’s been so great. We haven’t gone over so far (We started Dec. 1). It feels so good to be on top of things. I own a dance studio so my income is always dependent on how many kids register so I never really know. We do month to month as well. We are almost out of debt. I say 2 more months!! It’s the best feeling. I would love to try this system!!

Currently my husband and I are not on a budget, but we really should be. I just started reading about Dave Ramsey at the start of the year. My hope is to put something in place by Spring.

I went to a completely cash budget a few years ago and loved it! I saved so much money because it really made me think about where my money was going, and it became a challenge to me to save as much as possible.

I got away from doing that in the past year, and it’s a goal of mine to start again this year. I’m much more accountable to myself when I’m cash only.

  14. Nina says:

  15. I’ve been a following for awhile and love your posts. You are so down to earth and really tell it like it is. We’ve been doing Dave Ramsey since 2007 and paid off a lot through 2009. We have student loans and a car payment left. In 2009 after making a last payment on another vehicle we found out we were pregnant with twins! We were so glad we had started the Dave Ramsey plan when we did. We are just now really getting back on track and doing the Cash System. It’s been going great this month!
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    Blessings,
    Stefanie

  22. sonyahove says:

I am drooling over these envelope wallets! My husband and I went through FPU about three years ago. We are not in any debt except for our house but now have two kids in college and a sophomore in high school and we are trying to get them all through college debt free. We made a renewed commitment to a cash system as a New Year’s resolution. But it would be SO MUCH easier if I had a cute wallet to motivate me πŸ™‚ I am following you and Melissa. Thanks!

  23. Samantha says:

With me being a SAHM and my husband a teacher, we are most definitely on a budget. I don’t know that we really have a set system. My husband is the one who’s good with money so he plans out how much we can spend on what and we try not to go outside of that. When we have cash we use it it to get gas and groceries instead of using the debit card. We aren’t always good at it but we try to stick to it as best we can. I love the cash only idea and the super cute wallet to organize it!

  24. Jess says:

I’ve been a follower for quite awhile and am now following you on FB and pinterest!! I’m also following Melissa on all three now too!!! Oh my goodness I LOVE her etsy shop! Can I please have one of each??
I started honestly putting myself on a budget in March of last year. & then I lost my job in April & it’s been downhill ever since. Now that I’m finally working and with tax & school refunds right around the corner, I am starting over and determined to get money into savings and debt paid off as soon as possible! GAZELLE intensity!
Dave Ramsey continues to be an inspiration and I look forward to following his plan in FPU!!

I am very much hoping that this giveaway goes in my favor because my husband and I, about a month ago, made the plunge and have vowed to do the ‘ramsey’ budget/envelope system. I’m currently using paper envelopes that I printed off a freebie site and they just aren’t as pretty as Melissa’s gorgeous wallets. So far our budget has gone great! We’ve, of course, had to adjust here and there since it’s pretty new to us, but overall we have structure and are loving the cash system.

I love this! Your blog is great. I followed & subscribed to both. I love her etsy shop – especially Cash Envelope System Wallet with laminated cotton.

I am on a cash budget as well! Just started for the new year. This would definetly help keep me on track. Plus as a new-er sewer this would serve as an excellent template and example for me.

    Thanks for the great giveaway.

I’ve been by her Etsy site, and i LOVE the patterns she used on everything. So cute! The kids’ ones are a great idea too.

  40. Patty says:

I’ve made a budget for years on paper and used the whole budget book and Home Management binder for it, but never could get either my husband nor I to stick to it. So no matter how nice it was, it never worked because we just wouldn’t follow it. But this year we’ve started using a spreadsheet and it’s been so much easier to make the budget and move things around as some things need to be paid earlier or have to put off til the next paycheck etc. At first my hubby was logging into the Google docs to view it, but he’s stopped thinking about it. So it’s mainly up to me to make sure we do it and stick to it. It’s a main goal for us this year, and I know the cash system is where we need to be. I have a crude one I’ve made out of a coupon organizer, but it’s not ideal. Hoping I win one of Melissa’s! Thanks for having this contest!!

My husband and I started the Dave Ramsey budget last October. It’s going okay. I get a little stressed out while grocery shopping, but usually come in just under my $100/wk. We use a leather Dave Ramsey envelope system, but these are so much prettier. It would make me smile everytime I pulled it out of my purse.

  47. I tried to do an excel spreadsheet every month to set our budget, but it didn’t work well for us. We never stuck to it. I am in desperate need to come up with a system. Right now we’re just spending money and putting any excess into a savings account. The cash system sounds like a great way to do it. I love the cute wallets too!

  48. I am already a follower here and you are in my blogroll. I am now following Melissa AND our budget is very tight right now. We just shut our pizza biz down after 20 years! It is a long story why…but that’s not for here:)

Anyway…we use cash only…NO credit…stopped that about 3 years ago. My husband gives me so much each week for groceries and misc. When that’s gone…it’s gone. Right now we aren’t going to movies or out to eat. Just watching everything.

I think the Dave Ramsy way is an excellent idea. My son, Jackson took that course and loved the envelope system.

    I hope I win!!!

    Thanks for the chance:)

  49. I am a follower of ABFOL! LOVE it! πŸ™‚

  50. I am now a follower of Melissa, and looked around her shop! Such cute stuff!!

  51. My husband and I also try to follow Dave’s plan! We read Dumping Debt and Financial Peace University and are on our way! We are young with 2 kids, so it can be a challenge, but we are trying hard! It will be such a great feeling to be debt free one day!! I would LOVE one of these cute wallets!

  52. I am follower of ABFOL. elleb at inbox dot com

  53. My husband and I are trying to pay off $5000 of debt this year. We are on a tight budget, counting every penny and using the snowball effect. Thanks for the opportunity to win this nice wallet. I have been looking at them on etsy all week. πŸ™‚ elleb at inbox dot com

As the New year approached my husband and I were determined to change our way of spending/saving, (or lack thereof). I found your website through pinterest and have been addicted ever since!! As a mother of 5, and a teacher who decided to stay at home with the kiddos we have made a lot of sacrifices (totally worth it!!) We just could never seem to get on track!! After I made my home management binder and got things organized I looked into David Ramsey’s snowball debt plan. We are currently working towards being debt free! I now it’s early, but I pray for diligence and determination!!! I’m also excited about the impact this is having on my children. This morning my 6th grader told me that he figured we saved 36 dollars this week by packing lunches!! Thanks you are a true inspiration!!

We made the switch this year to the envelope system and have been hit pretty hard living overseas with a bad exchange rate. However, I feel SO much more freedom knowing our boundaries and enjoying what we can purchase with cash. We have a baby coming next month and one of our biggest financial goals was met last October when we paid off our final payment to student loans and are now 100% debt free! Praise God! Now its amazing to think with our sweet new baby coming that we can focus more on actually being proactive about long-term savings. LOVE the envelope system and LOVE these adorable wallets!

We are doing the snow all and love it and hope to be debt free by the end of this year. Except for the house. But just to get rid of everything else will feel so good!

  89. Sab says:

Hallo! My experience is very different from all of you, since I am Italian and here things work quite differently. I only have a checking account and the ATM/debit card that goes with it. I receive my salary (monthly) and I pay my bills on this account. It is where I keep all my money, I don’t really see the meaning of having a saving account. And having only 2000 dollars (or euro) on my account I would never feel ok, I would be so worried! If I lose my job, I would probably not be able to find another one in 6-8 months (this is the terrible Italian job market condition right now) so considering 500 euro minimum as monthly expense – more if you have a rent to pay or a mortgage – I like to have at least 5000 euro on my account.

Then I have 2 credit cards. But here credit cards get debited on your account in FULL each month. So we don’t get too much in debt. Every month I could use my total 4000 euro plafond (2000 for each card) but the next month I would see my bank account with 4000 euro less. Easy! πŸ™‚ The only way we have to be in debt is to have a mortgage or a financing, and it’s usually done for big items (house, car, furniture, electrical appliances).
Of course I am assuming you have a salary that covers your normal expenses, but this is a different story.

I hope that many people in the US do the same as you and stop using those “evil” credit cards. πŸ™‚

I just visited Melissa’s etsy shop – SO cute!

I am on the difficult transitional path to an envelope system! I have successfully set up all my autopays that I possibly can so I never have to worry about forgetting my payments! The biggest thing I have done is to freeze my credit card in a block of ice! It keeps me from using it without thinking…if I want to use it to buy something, it needs to be a darn good reason because it takes a couple hours to thaw! Because I am a very young homeowner and still have college debt, I can’t get rid of it completely in case of a true emergency. However, I have made a huge dent into paying my debts by setting a strict envelope budget for entertainment, food, and gas, which has been going really well!

  104. I love your blog. Thanks for the cute ways to stay organized- especially when it comes to money. I just got married this past summer so my husband and I budget a lot to stay on top of what we owe. This would be a great tool to help us. Thanks for the chance to win something fun πŸ™‚

We do not follow a budget ( perhaps that is why we have debt ) . Our paychecks go directly into the bank and I withdrawl too much money for groceries weekly. Now as far as a budget…I say I am on one. I write the expenses every paycheck and allocate money to a zero balance. Then, I get to the store and buy WAY to much. Once the next paycheck comes, I’m borrowing money from other categories to make it work.

Hopefully this cash envelope system will kick my rear end into gear!

    Thanks so much!

I’ve been a follower of Lemons for a few months now. LOVE IT!!

I just shared your give away on FB & will also tweet about it, as well as post a link on my blog.

We are debt free besides our mortgage thanks to Dave Ramsey. We followed his snow ball system & were able to get out of debt & buy a bigger home. My income is suffering right now, but thanks to Dave, we aren’t in dire straights!

I have been thinking of starting the envelope cash system once I read about it on your blog last wk. I want to start giving before I pay bills & save. I think the cash wallet system will help me start this new way of managing my money. πŸ™‚

  120. these wallets are ADORABLE & FUNCTIONAL – what a wonderful combintation – thanks for hostessing this wonderful giveaway – keeping my fingers crossed. We are on a forever budget…we only buy what we can afford THAT month never carrying a balance over to the next month – if it is something bigger – we SAVE to buy it (I’m currently saving for a new couch!) So…this means I have to WAIT to get stuff I really want but it FEELS right & good!

We kinda-sorta have a budget, but not really. I have a set amount of cash I take out for groceries, but it usually isn’t quite enough (okay if I’m really honest, I just need to spend less!). All other bills get paid through the checkbook when they come due. I like your idea of sitting down at the beginning of the month and making a budget for that month’s bills.

  124. Leanne says:

We are on a loose budget and currently use credit card and mint.com to track. I would really like to pay down our studen loans so maybe the cash system would help.

I just discovered you today & am now following ABFOL (cute name). I am just getting going with Dave Ramseys finanacial peace university after a year of procrastination. I am also following Melissa too-I LOVE LOVE LOVE her wallet systems on ETSY-I want one!-fun & funky budgeting!

  138. Sandra says:

What a great giveaway! I need to get on a strict budget in a bad way. We “try” to follow a lot of the things that Dave Ramsey teaches, but have not really buckled down and stuck to a tight plan…and it shows. Our holiday spending went a little wonky and now the bill are coming in. I am planning on using the debt snowball and switching to the cash only plan would be a wonderful way to get me on track. Thanks again for the giveaway.

  151. Following both blogs. Okay, choosing something from her store is just impossible. I don’t know if I like the band-it or the zip-it ones better! But I LOVE the idea of a cash budget! We do not use a cash budget. Why? Well we’re adopting and trying to get the miles for the flights on our credit card.We basically use it as cash and pay it off every single month. Would LOVE to try a cash budget once we’re done with saving for our girl!

We are on a new type of budget. Buying a house this spring so we sold our truck and save the payments for that towards the closing costs. We are selling our land and will use the proceeds from that to put on the principle of the house and buy a new truck with cash! we are NO CREDIT CARDS!!!! Cash only!

  156. My husband and I are in our third week of Financial Peace University (at home), so this would be a glorious prize for me!! I checked out her etsy site, and Wow! Cool stuff!

My husband and I attended a Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University last year. It brought a whole new perspective on how we were living. We have been on Dave’s plan for a year now and are so happy we started. We plan on being debt free in about 3 years. Can’t wait!!

    jolynda8p at yahoo dot com

  162. I am a follower of ABFOL and now I am also following Melissa’s blog. And have checked out her etsy shop. Husband and I just finished attending Financial Peace University class right before the holidays and we loved it. We immediately started following his advice and created our snow ball budget and started paying off our debt. So far we have cancelled two credit cards and have started to build our emergency fund. We also created our monthly and weekly budget and every pay period we revise it to make sure we have a 0 balance and every penny is accounted for. This has been great to know were every penny is going and keeping track of our every single spending. We have realized that once you start paying cash for things you start to think twice about what you are going to buy. I have been careful on grocery shopping as well and use coupons and look at the ads really good before making my shopping list. Since we started using this process it feels really good to know where all of our money is going and we have not used Credit Cards since than.

  163. Sam says:

We are currently on a very bad ‘if I “need” it we buy it” budget. I hope to implement a much better, much needed budget soon. Thanks!

  164. stout family says:

My hubby loves Dave Ramsey and has been trying to get me to read his book…and I know I should! My budgeting method is just to be super frugal! I spend as little money as possible. Not the most sophisticated, nor the smartest way of going about it, but that’s the way I do it!

  165. I’m a follower of ABFOL! Just became a follower of Melissa’s blog. How nifty are those zipit cash envelopes???? We have been TRYING to be conistent with the envelope system for a couple of months. Christmas shopping via amazon messed us up a little… BUT it’s a new year and we’re getting back on track! This giveaway would def be helpful and FUN to use!

  166. Elle says:

I am a huge fan of budgeting but it’s always a pain trying to convince my hubby to follow a budget too. Luckily we just bought our first house so I am forcing a budget on him πŸ™‚ I’ve tried the cash budgets in the past but can’t seem to manage it – mainly due to not having a good system for carrying the money on me. These days I keep an extensive paper trail of the money that is alloted each pay for each item on my budget and the deductions each time we spend money. Am seriously considering purchasing some of these cash envelope systems.

  180. Kirsten says:

I am just beginning my budget system and using paper wallets. For a couple of years, I tried to convince my husband that Dave Ramsey’s system was the way to go but he had resisted. My DH passed away suddenly at the age of 43 on December 19, 2011 and within 24 hours I realized that my life would never be the same and neither would my finances. With a 7 year old son depending on me, I sat out to make my way using Dave Ramsey as my financial guide. This is the second week and I think I have redone my budget at least 3 times! I can’t wait to be debt free and scream “I’m debt free” on Dave’s radio program!

  181. Kirsten says:

I love Melissa’s blog! I just might have to buy some of those beautiful envelopes if I don’t win!

I am a college student, getting married soon. My fiancΓ© and I really want to start our marriage off right with a good budget and a good way to pay off student loans as soon as possible. My mother used the cash envelope system before she died and it worked WONDERS for our family. I have gotten through college on that system and have paid off all the interest on my student loans because of it.

I would love to win one of Melissa’s pretty envelope system wallets and get started on a fresh budget with my new husband πŸ™‚

    Thanks!
    Tiffany

  198. KM says:

I have always used an envelope system and usually it works well. I combine an electronic system with the actual cash system (I prefer to use my debit card for gas and of course, online purchases). I account for the money in the envelope each week and adjust to fill in any gaps. Works well and we are 7 months from being debt-free!

  199. Mrs.M says:

Oh my goodness. Her stuff makes me EXCITED to budget! And that’s a huge deal because budgeting is something I was afraid of starting!

We are a military family that recently moved. The move put us in a bad spot, financially. Thanks to budgeting, we’re getting into a groove. We know EXACTLY where our money is going! And I have an allowance for Target. πŸ˜‰

I give myself a “Stuff” budget. Stuff are the extra things that you find while doing your normal shopping that are not on the list and you don’t NEED, like: a new top, tube of lipstick, or handbag, not just for myself but for others as well.

I give myself $100-$130 (there is a flex if I’m buying for a b-day,etc.) ever 2 weeks. I find so many GREAT deals that if I didn’t set a limit I’d be spending so much!

    queen stacey 25 @ gmail . com

  212. Destiny says:

My husband and I started with a budget as soon as we were married (almost 2 years ago) nad put ourselves on the case system (mostly). We took Financial Peace not long after we married. We’ve been at Dave’s plan for about a year and a half. We follow the plan pretty much as he describes it. We’ve accumulated no new debt since we married and have paid off about $20K. Sadly it’s not more since we’ve been a single income family for almost a year. We plan to be debt free as soon as Sallie Mae gets kicked out!

  213. Chrizzy says:

    Hi,
I am on a cash budget due to having to pull the weight (happily btw) of having my son, DIL and their little girl (yes, I am a grandma and loving it) staying for two years with me while they finished their educations. Now they live on their own (YAY!) and I am trying to expand my hobby (quilting).

    Kind regards,

  225. Trisha says:

We’re on a cash budget following the Dave Ramsey system. It’s been excellent, but we’ve had quite a few set backs since we started in Sept of 2009. We should have been debt-free by now, but the Mr. got laid off for 8 months, so no progress was made then. We’re back on track, now, and will hopefully be debt free by summer 2013.

We are not on a real budget, and it would be a good thing. One thing I find difficult is grocery/household shopping — I stock up on deals when I find them, so some weeks/months we spend a good bit and others hardly anything at all. That has always made me feel like an envelope system wouldn’t work so well for us. Do you have advice about that?

Dave Ramsey rocks! Daughter last semester of college — wedding this year — praying for stable jobs and finish line of mortgage. Salvation Army shopping and coupons — every little thing helps.

Love the blog…subscribed to feed, followed on Pinterest, added shop to ETSY favs.

  275. Hi Toni!

I found your blog on New Year’s Eve when I searched “Organization Tips” on Google. Now, I am completly wrapped up in organizing and “dejunking” every aspect of our lives. I love your tips and your before and after photos, they let me know my junk is no worse than anyone else’s.

A friend of ours gave us the Dave Ramsey book a few years ago. We were young and dumb, so we tossed the book in the bookshelf and didn’t think about it again until we found ourselves desperate, which was a two years ago this month. I recently graduated with a BS in Elementary Education, but at the time I was a stuggling college student and my husband was working very hard to keep our heads above water. We were paying for tuition and books on the credit card and the monthly payment was getting out of control. We decided to start Dave’s program when we found out we were expecting our baby. She will soon be two and we have learned a whole new way of budgeting and saving. We are now debt free (except for our house and car)!!!!!!! We are very proud of ourselves, but a switching to cash only system is a daunting task. We are trying to implement that system now and such a clever cash-envelope system would definitely help us out. I’m sure it would take some of the stress out of organizing the new system.

I am now a proud follower of ABFOL, Melissa’s blog, and added her cash-envelope system as a favorite on my etsy.com account. Also, I am going to add a post to my blog…it is new! : )

    Thanks,
    LauraLee

  283. Janna says:

We are not on a budget:(…YET! We signed up for FPU that was supposed to start this month but they didn’t have enough people sign up so they cancelled the class. I am going to get my husband on board yet!!! I would LOVE one these gorgeous wallets for when we start the class!

  284. Hey! I’m following a time for everything and a bowl full of lemons. You posts about budgeting, organizing etc are SO inspiring to me! Thank you for sharing!

  286. Saundra says:

I follow ABFOL. Love your blog.

  287. I follow your blog. Using the envelope system is one of the ways I want to start this year to become more aware of our spending.

  288. Alyssa says:

I am 26 years old and just learning the benefits of budgeting! Not budgeting has left me in debt…now I’m starting to save my emergancy fund (I got in a car accident over the summer and had to put my deductible on my credit card…lesson learned!) and then will be debt snowballing! Luckily my mom paid off about $600 but I still have a long way to go with student loans and everything. I am also starting envelope budgeting…which will be a challenge since I always use my debit card! But I have used a credit card since November and it feels good!!

And yes, we’re trying sooo hard to establish a good budget system right now, we really need to pay some things off! This envelope system looks like it might be a good way to go!

  292. Mary Beth says:

I am now a follower of both sites via email feeds! I have a written budget, but it is not a good one that takes into account different things that happen through out the year- HOA dues etc… I have tried the cash system once before, but really want to try it again starting in Feb. and we are working on a realistic budget this time! I hope to win that cute wallet! πŸ™‚

  293. I’m a follower of ABFOL

  294. We use a combination of cash and bill pay for our budget. Hubby takes care of most everything, gives me the cash for the things I take care of and we’re done. πŸ˜‰

  295. Misti says:

I am a follower of your blog.

My family is following a budget, but a cute cash wallet would be fabulous! I can’t wait until we can call into Dave & scream that we are “debt free”!.

  297. myflsun says:

I’m now a follower of Melissa’s blog. Thanks so much for introducing me to her. I’m looking forward to spending some time over there and checking out her blog and store more deeply!

  298. myflsun says:

I am on a ‘budget.’ I sit down and plan what we need to spend on bills and gas and food, etc. and what we have left to spend. Unfortunately, it’s hard to stick to because it’s just so loose. I have used the cash system before and it’s what has worked the best for us. For some reason, we’ve just had a hard time getting back to it, but this year I plan on working even harder at budgeting and sticking to it!

  299. Project Mama says:

    Just liked you on facebook!

  300. Project Mama says:

I made a new years resolution this year to begin using the envelope system! As I successfully started on the first paycheck of the year! It was so rewarding and it was an HUGE eye opener for me!

The ONLY problem I had with the envelope system is by the end of my shopping trips into 3 different stores I had 4 paper cuts!! HAHA!! SO now I see what the reason for cloth envelopes in using the envelope system!

I’m hoping that in December of 2012, we will have paid down some of our debt! BUT that we have also successfully used the envelope system to help control our spending!

  301. Project Mama says:

I visited her etsy shop! I love all her products and her designer fabrics too!

  302. Shannon says:

I am a follower of ABFOL and signed up for Melissa’s blog. Our goal for 2012 is to get organized!! And part of that is going to a strict cash budget. Oh how this would help me do both!!
    Thanks,

  307. I checked out Melissa’s Etsy shop. I really like her products & will be ordering soon!

  308. My family follows a budget & we are currently debt free (except for our mortgage)!

  309. I am a follower of your blog!

  310. I now follow “a time for everything” & she has adorable items in her Etsy store – love those wallets!

  311. We are sort of on a budget. I’ve read great things about Dave Ramsey but I really hate budgeting. It actually makes me sick to my stomach. I know I should be a better steward of my family’s finances, however, so I’m thinking of jumping on the Dave Ramsey bandwagon… just terrified to take the plunge!

  312. spelsue says:

Currently I don’t believe you can call our system a budget. I’m hoping this is the year we become money aware. Your system looks like it is an easy one to follow. I do like that it is just for a month and can be changed due to life the following month.
I’m a follower and love your site!

  313. Julie Wood says:

I’m a follower of both blogs and have shared Melissa’s FB page from mine. We have been doing Dave Ramsey’s system for a few years. We do fall off the wagon but get right back on. Our children have their own give/save/spend envelopes but LOVE Melissa’s products. Thanks for blogging about this.

I love your blog & am now following Mellisa’s too. Her cash envelope wallet would be great! We are now on a “my husband lost his job, private Christian College tuition payments and putting our IL home on the market” budget…Aldi grocery is my new best friend! I’m following how others are successfully budgeting. Hope I win the give-away:)

  320. Pearl Girl says:

I have recently decided I would start the enveloe system again, it worked well last time, but I somehow fell off track, must be cuz I didn’t have a cute enough wallet, lol. Hers are A M A Z I N G.

  322. ahcastillo says:

I am a follower of Melissa’s blog and I love her things in her Etsy shop. My favorite is the kid’s wallet. Would love to teach my children how to budget.

  323. ahcastillo says:

We are currently on a budget. A few years back we went throught the FPU class. However, through out the years we would fall off track with our goal to become debt free. Last year I decided to become a stay at home mom and we came up with a budget and have stuck with it. We have paid off credit card debt, my school loans, my husbands truck and many other things. Currently we have my car note and our house left until we are completely debt free. However, I will always stick to our budget. It just makes sense not to accumulate debt. Can’t wait to scream WE’RE DEBT FREE!!!!

  324. Julia says:

    I am a ABFOL follower!

  325. Julia says:

I just followed Melissa’s blog, too!

  326. Julia says:

Oh my am I on a budget. I just finished grad school and am working as a substitute teacher until I find a full time position. While incredibly fun, the pay is light. Fortunately I’m able to live with my parents so that I can save what little is coming in.

I’m lousy at sticking to it. Drive through Starbucks and trips to Target are just so tempting! I used to to the cash system and need to get back on the wagon. Knowing I can do it stylishly is the encouragement I need!

  327. Julia says:

I tweeted about this giveaway and post. I’m doing a word of the year challenge and my word is PURPOSE. The cash envelope system is the perfect way for me to spend and save purposefully!

  328. MLXOQXO says:

Am one of your followers, visited Melissa’s etsy store, n follower of her blog.

As an Accountant, we’re always on a budget. The key is to pay yourself first, when your paid. Even if it’s a small amount… Stash it in savings or a mutual fund. Then pay monthly bills automatically ( either all at once or in intervals). Save on stamps too.

One of the best savings tool is Upromise. You sign up for free… Add your credit card, grocery, drug card numbers and get residue back. If you sign up for their credit card (no annual fee), you get even more residue back. I signed up when my son was in 2nd grade and have now accumulated $6,124.87 towards his college tuition (he just started college as a Freshman in college).

Another tip is to accumulate goods around your house on a monthly basis. Donate it to a legit non-profit organization (i.e. Goodwill, St Vincent de Paul). Keep a list of what you donated and have it stamped and verified by the organization. You can then reduce to annual taxes. Found money for those of us who really have so much in the US, as compared to other very poor nations. Giving will reap tenfold…..

    Thanks ! Moyxoxo

    Facebooked it, too!

  330. Jessica says:

I am following ABFOL via GFC & am subscribed via email!

  331. Jessica says:

I subscribed to “A Time for Everything” blog via email. Tried to follow with GFC, but it wouldn’t connect. I visited her etsy store & I love the Envelope system wallet kit in Timeless Treasures April in Paris & Michael Miller black dumb dot!

  332. Jessica says:

We aren’t on a real budget, but I would love to be. Our pay goes directly to savings though & I withdraw what we need for the week. My hubby gets a set amount of cash each week & I pay whatever bills are due that week, then whatever amount is left is split between groceries, my gas & extras. I try to leave $50/week in savings, but lately that’s been hard, since we are a single income family of 5.

  333. Jessica says:

Liked you on FB & shared your giveaway on my profile!

  334. Dianna says:

We started doing Dave Ramsey debt diet about 2 years ago, and paid off all our debt in one year! Feels great to be debt free. We use the cash envelope system as well, using some cloth pencil cases I got at the dollar store, but these are so much prettier! πŸ™‚ Some months we do better than others (still have to get better at not ‘borrowing’ from different categories, but at least we aren’t spending more than we make!

  335. Dianna says:

    I follow ABFOL!

  336. Melanie says:

    I follow your blog!

  337. Melanie says:

I sort of have a budget set up in a spreadsheet, but I think I would do much better sticking to it if I went to the cash envelope system. Hope I win this so I can do it in style! πŸ™‚

  338. Stacey says:

I followed ABFOL and Melissa’s blog. I also checked out the Etsy shop, so cute! We do have a budget and usually use our debit card, but are trying all cash in the new year. These would be a cool way to carry cash.

  339. i am abfol follower!

  340. i now follow melissa’s blog!

  341. i have tried to follow larry burkets budgeting for several years but recently have seen the need to get really serious about the cash end of it. i used to do it but have fallen away and it is showing. time to get serious!

  342. Hollie says:

I’m new to ABFOL but since finding it can’t get enough. I don’t have a stated budget but have got to start one. We’ve tried several times and just haven’t found what works for us yet. This sounds like an excellent idea.

  343. Liz says:

I am now a following of your blog!! LOVE it πŸ™‚

  344. Liz says:

I am also now following Melissa’s blog as well πŸ™‚

  345. I’m loving this blog! My husband has two jobs, so he allows me to have one of his paychecks. So, we use a cash system, I pay for gas and groceries, and misc. things with my account. He takes care of everything else. We got married in August, and are really trying to make our savings grow! I would love to try this system out!

  346. Chelsea says:

I am a follower of ABFOL blog and Melissa’s blog. My family currently doesn’t have a budget system that works for us. One of our new years resolutions is to develop a budget system and to try and decrease the amount of money we spend a month.

  347. suzieQ says:

I just became a follower. I think I used to be better at budgeting when my family was young. I’m on my own now and I need to get back into the saddle. I kind of budgeted that way, my mom, who lived through the Depression and hasn’t ever paid credit card debt (!)budgets with envelopes…so I know it works.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  348. suzieQ says:

I just went to Melissa’s site and joined there too! I’m excited to get back in charge of my finances.

  349. Kim says:

I love those wallets! My family has been using Dave Ramsey’s cash system for about 3 years. Like you, sometimes we are really good at it and other times, not so much. However, when we fail, we know right where to start back! We have no credit card debt and only a student loan and house left! It is so gratifying not to “give” all of your money away to creditors!
Our kids also follow the Dave Ramsey Jr. system and earn their commission weekly for household chores. The love it! Seriously!

  350. Traci says:

I just found your blog and am in love with it! I am now a follower. As well as A Time For Everything. I am also following you on Facebook and Pinterest! I don’t really have a budget. I just try to get the bills payed first… and thank God for check protection! I am a Massage Therapist so my income changes from month to month. I really like the idea of sitting down and setting a budget every single month! I really hope that I win that wallet I think it would really help out my money and budgeting situation.

Good afternoon, I am a new follower to both Blogs. Thanks to pinterest!! My husband and I have been married for almost 26 years are debt free totally!! We are so very blessed and have never fallen into to trap so many are falling prey to. My husbands philosophy, “if you don’t have the money to buy it, wait til you do!” We probably do not spend wisely because we are out of debt. Something that needs to change. Retirement will be here before we know it! I have a daughter-in-law that would benefit greatly from the cute organizer. She would just flip! Keep the good stuff coming and we will keep reading…. God Bless!

  353. As far as our budget goes, we haven’t had much of one yet. Right now we’re just trying to track all of our expenditures so we know where the money is going. But I’d love to use a cash envelope system, especially for groceries!

  355. We have discussed starting FPU, but haven’t yet. :/ I look forward to following your blog and Melissa’s, as well. Wonderful ideas on all. Her shop is wonderful, too. I NEVER even thought of looking elsewhere for an envelope system outside of Ramsey’s website! Entrepreneurism at it’s finest!

  356. The Fells says:

I’ve did Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University several years ago and am proud to say the only payment we currently have is our house! It’s such a great program! Thanks for the opportunity to win a envelope system! They’re gorgeous!

Good luck to you and everyone who posted above on your ventures to a debt free life!

I loved reading this post. My husband and I are newlyweds, I’m still in college, and we have a lot of debt. It gets very overwhelming, and we really need to start budgeting. After finding your blog through pinterest, I have been truely inspired to start watching what we spend alot more closely! My husband and I made a family management binder after viewing your blog post. My sister in law bought me Dave Ramsey books and DVD’s for Christmas. I am just getting started and think we have a plan that will work. So thank you for all of your wonderful ideas! I’ve been following your blog for a little over a month. I am now following Melissa’s blog and I favorited her shop on Etsy from my shop. I also told all of my fans on facebook about your give away. http://www.facebook.com/hopeclarkboutique

  369. ADORABLE things in the Etsy shop!

  370. I am now following Melissa’s blog and love it too… she’s amazing!

  371. I had a friend that told me about the envelope system a few years ago at the time, I had a lot going on and simply couldn’t do it. Since then my husband passed away after a brief and unexpected illness and I’ve been struggling to stay afloat and “learn” how to handle everything on a shoe string. I think this could help me get started!

We have a budget. We’re not very strict about it and my husband could care less, even though we’re barely making ends meet! I would love to try the cash budget system, but I spend cash worse than using my debit card. I would like to try it though, just scared if it would do worse damage.

  376. Jo Ann says:

  377. Allison says:

Love ABFOL and all the other sites you have introducted me too including this one! Love the cash wallet. We are relatively new to Dave Ramseys FPU and trying to build our emergency fund as we speak. I am having the most difficult time with the cash evelope system as I am a debit card junkie…lol!
I would love one of Melissa’s wallets and think that would continue to help me follow the program and help my family become debt free.
Again, thank you for your beatiful site!

  378. Hi! Just found your blog and it is a powerhouse of ideas! I am following you this year and soaking up all the tips I can to get organized and more productive! Thank-you!

I stumbled upon ABFOL at the end of January and decided to embark on your 21 day challenge…I am on day 15! I am loving how organized my house is becoming! While following your blog I started to read your financial advice. My husband and I had to read Dave Ramsey’s books for our pre-marital counseling. We followed for a while but fell off the wagon. Now that I gave birth to our 2nd baby 2 months ago our goal is for me to be a stay at home mom. In order to do this we need to get our finances under control and take our finances seriously. Our goal is to get re-organize our budget and follow Dave’s plan! Thank you for the inspiration!m

  386. Jo says:

I used to budget all the time. Then we moved, and well, ended up living on $900/mth for a family of 5. My budget was basically “don’t buy anything!” It’s amazing how we found free activities to enjoy and how I became even MORE resourceful. We have a thing out here called “the share shed” by our nuisance grounds/garbage dumps. If you have something of use that you don’t want, you leave it there. If you need something, you take it. IT IS AMAZING!

Yes! We use a budget. We use what used to be Money Matters (can’t remember the new name), it is a cash envelope system but we do it all with the program and data entry so there isn’t “real” cash. Works well for us.

  390. Mark,Kim Lau says:

I believe everything happens for a reason. I checked out Dave Ramseys course, and can’t afford it right now, and stumbled over to your page here, which you were talking about a cash system. Exactly why I wanted to go take his course. You not only tell us how to do it, your giving away the cutest wallet ever. How could you not stay on track with this? I went over to Melissa’s and also became a follower of hers as well as yours. Thank you for all you do.

I’m just starting to use the envelope system and love the wallet!

  394. I absolutely LOVE this idea of a cash budget and this cash wallet system is perfect to handle the budget we create. My husband and I have had a rough 3 years going from having a very successful business in San Diego, CA to the economy taking a dive and we had to relocate to Nashville, TN area to try and keep our heads above water. We have been here for almost 2 years and finally a month ago my husband became employed! We have learned to live with the bare essentials and I mean bare. Over the last few months I have been reading your blog and several others, Oprah and Suze Orman discussing going to a cash system and now I am implementing it and this wallet would be a fabulous addition rather than the ugly white envelopes (I go through alot each month becuase they get easily torn!). I will share this concept with eveyone I know via FB, Twitter and I joined Melissa’s Blog as well. Thanks for the insipration and look forward to a more blessed year for my family!

We’ve been on a budget for a couple years now, cash for groceries and budgeted amounts for other things using the debit card, and it’s been working great. We’ve paid off all our debt except for the house, but we’re still working on having an emergency fund in place so we don’t go BACK in debt. I hope I win because I’ve wanted one of these wallets for forEVER.

  399. Kimberly says:

We are on a very looooosey goosey budget and want to get much more in line. This is a great way to do it!

  400. Suz says:

Follower, visited the site, enjoy reading your blog

  401. Cindy Riggs says:

I too am on a very tight budget. My husband is turning 65 in April. We need to have everything lined up when he retires so we are not living on month to month paychecks. I have a NEAT machine and I will tell you, scanning in all the receipts will really show you where your money is going, and sometimes hit you in the face. It keeps us on line with our expenses as we can see exactly where everything is going. I have heard the Dave Ramsey program is really good, I need to look into that and start the cash system. Thank you for all the good information you provide us with.

  402. Nona says:

I don’t know how I’ve lived so long without a budget, but I think it is time to start… I’ve taken financial classes, including Dave Ramsey, Crown Financial, and another called the ABC’s… maybe what I need to get kick started is an envelope like Melissa’s! Fun blog- love the name

  403. Rachele says:

I do have a budget. Unfortunately, it’s a very strict budget with no wiggle room. I haven’t tried to cash system before, but it sounds like a really good idea. I too have a lot of debt, and I’m hoping that I can follow some of your suggestions and tips to a debt free life. Thanks! I am also a follower of your site and of Melissa’s.

  404. Natalie says:

My husband and I are not currently on a budget system:( BUT, we have decided that 2012 is a new year for fresh starts and we ARE getting out of debt this year, one step at a time. We actually just started reading Dave Ramsey’s book this week! I am so glad I came across your blog! We plan on setting up a budget this week as well. 409. JvB says:

We’ve been paying down our debt through a plan I created in Quicken. Fortunately, it’s worked for our credit card but the larger debts (mortgage, school, and auto loans) have been slow to pay down. We have a “budget” but it’s not strictly followed. I would love to move to a cash system but have struggled when I start one.

  410. Amy says:

I definitely think this would help me out! As a recent college grad, I’m trying to figure out best pay off my credit card and student loan debt without being completely poor. πŸ™‚

  411. Jennifer says:

2012 is our year to take financial action. We use a an envelope system for saving that we just started. I was glad to see you budgeted $150 for groceries. We spend about that every other week, and $100 the other weeks.

  412. Jennifer says:

    I am following you now!

I became a follower last week after using your inspiration to make a home management binder. Here is a link to mine.
    http://therumelys.blogspot.com/2012/01/home-management-binder.html
It includes a finances section where I will keep track of our monthly budget. I have been keeping track of all of our receipts this month so we can make a realistic budget starting in February. I am quite interested in doing the envelope system. We first heard about it when we did the Crown Financial Study with our church a few years ago.

  415. Beth Lewis says:

I now follow Melissa’s blog and I’ve already checked out her etsy shop! My hubby and I took FPU several years ago to dig out of debt and save money for a new home. We’ve gotten slack on it and are really starting to buckle down again. It’s amazing how quickly money can slip thru your fingers when not budgeting!

  417. Jenn says:

I now follow Melissa’s blog through Google Friend Connect. I also went to her Etsy shop and looked through the different items. While I like theCash Stash envelope system wallet with laminated cotton (Kate Spain Terrain Bloom Forest Floor) I REALLY like your wallet which I didn’t see in her shop.

  418. Jenn says:

We use a bit of a hybrid budget. I use the cash budget for food. When really using coupons we are at about $60 a week for a family of 5. My husband pays the bills electronically as soon as they are in each month. For the rest we mostly just talk about it and decide from there. We keep talking about having a more strict budget but just haven’t done it yet.

  419. Angela says:

I just found your blog and subscribed…it’s awesome! Also subscribed to Melissa’s blog and visited her etsy shop…I can’t wait to get one of her wallets. I currently do not have a set budget but had started listening to Dave Ramsey last month and am very motivated to get started…if only I can get my husband on board. lol

  423. jklentz says:

We got Dave Ramsey’s book a couple of years ago. We are paying off our credit cards using the snowball effect. It works, but does take time. We are now working on getting control of our weekly “cash” spending. I am seriously considering the cash budget. Thanks for the motivation to do it!

  428. Simply Jenny says:

I am already a follower of ABFOL. I have been using the Dave Ramsey envelope cash system for a year now. It is going pretty good. It keeps more focused on how low I am getting esp. on eating out. We do envelopes monthly for clothing, eating out, and entertainment. Shared your giveaway and Melissa’s blog on facebook. Also checked out Melissa’s etsy store and love her wallet designs.

  429. erinmotz says:

    Thanks again!

  430. Thanks for sharing. Love the envelope system. Hubs and I finished Financial Peace with Dave Ramsey in Feb. 2010. We have used the envelope budgeting system since then and have paid off 30,000 in debt also. Thanks for the hook up with Melissa at etsy, I will definitely stop by:)

  431. I read your blog a few nights ago and posted that I follow gfc and what our story was. I wanted to just give you a little updaye. We went to church today, our church has “Hitched” groups for married couples. We are starting our new studies and this go around they are offering FPU by Dave Ramsey! My hubby and I signed up and we are super excited!!! We had planned on downing it but on our own, super excited we get to do this with our church family.

  432. Hi, I’m not on a budget right now and really need to get on one! Your ideas are brilliant and I’m a follower of yours! I’d love to try the cash method more so since I’m having a baby in the next couple of months… I really need to start a savings account. I’m also a follower of her in etsy!

We have a little boy coming in April so we need to get on a budget right away and stay on it. I would love to get one of those beautiful envelope wallets to make things more organized in my purse so I don’t have to keep carrying around envelopes every place. I am a follower of ABFOL and Melissa’s Blog. I love the envelope system and have been doing a lot of reading in how to get this started. My husband and I have 5 children and very busy lives. I budget the best that I can but do believe the Envelope system would be a great help to me to get it all flowing smoothly. I love your Blog as well as Melissa’s. You both have wonderful organizing ideas and printables. I also love reading about everyones success stories and motivation that gives me the ability to stick to this. Have a great day everyone.

  446. I just became a follower of your blog and of you on Pinterest! Our family has to budget monthly because we live on one income. I’m still trying to find the style that works best for us, so I’m always looking for new tips and tricks. Budgeting definitely helps take the stress out of the month!

  447. Beth Ann says:

I am on a budget! We started out with Dave Ramsey as well, but we’ve sort of fallen behind. Since I started school, I don’t have to pay my student loans for awhile, so we decided that we will spend time working on our house first.

I like the idea of snowballing! I completely forgot about it, looks like I need to get my handy dandy Dave Ramsey book out again!

I also discovered your blog thanks to Pinterest. We have a budget, as in a goal amount for each category, but have trouble sticking to it and will definately try the envelope system. Love your blog, I have found so many helpful things already.

  463. Art and Sand says:

We are at a point in our lives when we no longer need to stick to a strict budget, but we do. I remember my envelope days well. We have always ‘paid ourselves first’ so we wouldn’t feel like we were working just to pay bills. We have been able to pay for our last 4 cars (my husband just bought his dream Porsche) with cash by putting away money every month. Living in a small house has been the best thing for our budget. We really think “do I really need it or is it just a whim?”. We find that we waste far less money by thinking before spending.

  464. Mrs. P says:

I am a new follower of ABFOL!

  465. I just started following Melissa and you, and I also got on Melissa’s Etsy and saw all of the cute/practical money pouches!

This blog is exactly what I needed and the tools to show me how to become organized and budget my money. The steps and the plans are a must for me since I tend to be too much of free spirit, going to what seems fun at that moment rather than taking the time to be disciplined. My husband, a teacher, and I, a nurse, got married about a year ago in February. We are on a budget of planning a menu for the week, cooking at home, and trying to save as much as we can. Even though this does work occasionally, I often wonder at the end of the week…where did that money go? My husband and I recently sat down and decided we needed to be more disciplined about our budget. I have heard wonderful words about Dave Ramsey. We are just starting the book so to win the free giveaway would give us the perfect start!! Also, my girls’ accountability group at church is keeping me accountable for organizing and managing bills, so regardless this blog will be apart of my journey πŸ™‚

    Thanks for the giveaway!

Paying cash for all purchases and setting a budgetted amount for the month is harder than I thought, but we will get throught this. I have been using the envelpoes that come with the monthly bills for my envelope system (hey they are free), but after just 2 weeks they are looking a little ragged. i would love to win this giveaway!!!

Following Melissa and visited her etsy page. I will say there are some really cute wallets. Perfect for budgeting and coupons.

I know silly question but this is the first time that I have seen these! I have seen the receipt or coupon accordion style ones that you can buy. thanks!

  501. Amanda Perry says:

Hi – love your site! I would like to be entered in the cash envelope system give-away. I am following ABFOL on Twitter, couldn’t follow Melissa’s blog because she’s not on twitter, but I tweeted about it. I am following her store on etsy. I have used a cash-only (other than utilities) for the past year, but I am going to break it down into the categories this year. This past, I’ve just got my “allowance” from the ATM for the week and when it was gone, it was gone. But I set up some paper envelopes for: 1) Gasoline, 2) Food, 3) Personal Care, 4) Home, 5) Farm, 6) Clothing, 7) Gifts/Charity, 8) Vacation, 9) Landscape, 10) Entertainment. While a lot of these can just stay in my home office, I would LOVE the cash envelope wallet for the ones that I use when I’m out and about. Great give-away! Peace in your new year!
