Master closet organization…

August 16, 2012
In our new home, we are blessed to have a HUGE master walk in closet. Its about 25×9 in size and fits a lot of stuff.  I knew that I had to find a good system to organize everything or it would end up out of control.  Also, I chose to hang all of our jeans/bottoms as well as all shirts. I kept my t-shirts in my dresser.  I love how it turned out!  Its nothing fancy… no elfa systems or any of that, but we love it and it works well for us.
Wooden hangers totally transform a closet. (Click on the picture below to shop for them).

The shoe boxes came from the Container store. I purchased a pack of 20 boxes for about $30 or so.
The decorative storage boxes are from the Container store as well. They are on sale for $16.99 each. They house beach towels, camera equipment, keepsakes, sports stuff, and travel items.

Below are wire drawers from Ikea. They store my husbands things (socks, pjs, swim trunks, white t-shirts, underwear, etc…).

My husbands belts and ties are organized with these neat hanging things from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. They were under $10 each.

My nursing uniforms, medical bag, and shoes are organized together for easy access.

The shelf on other side of the closet stores boot boxes, jewelry boxes, dust bags, etc. The decorative container keeps “boxes” for electronics, etc. (Ipad, kindles, etc…).

My husbands side is just as large as mine.

I found this shoe organizer at the Container Store. My flip flops fit perfectly in them. It was on sale for $12.99.

My husband hung a large peg board on one wall in the closet for my “accessories and purses”.

The hooks came from Home Depot.  I love this system so much!

I used a shower curtain hook for my belts.

Thats our organized master closet.  🙂  If you have any tips or ideas on how I can improve anything, leave me a comment.

  1. Wow, you aren’t kidding when you said it was big! It’s beautiful! You did a great job organizing it. I LOVE my huggable hangers that are super slim, too – they are great for getting a lot of stuff in a small space. Good work, Toni!

On another note: I’m always in awe from the size and number of american closets/houses/clothes etc
Being living in Europe myself and travelling around the world, I have to say it’s something it never stops to amaze me!

Since you moved close to where I live, can you just come to my house and help me?

Love it! How are you organizing your scarves? I have seen people use towel rods. Thoughts?

  13. Sandra says:

I am lovin’ your new closet!!! The peg board is a great way to store your purses and jewelry. That is my organizational problem. Too much jewelry and not any wall space to do something like you have. That is great!

  14. Kiki says:

What an amazing room! You have so many great ideas – I really love the peg board & I may have to “borrow” that one.

  15. Rhonda says:

Oh my goodness! This is amazing. i am in love with your closet. (this coming from the owner of a 3×2 closet)

  16. How nice! Where did you get the nice shelving? I’m trying to redo our closet (although it is not that big!) and I’m trying to figure out where to start!

  17. CAS says:

Great closet, Toni! I thought ours was big, but yours is much bigger! We haven’t done anything to ours yet, to utilize the space better, so you’ve given me some good ideas! Thanks for sharing!

  18. It looks beautiful, Toni! How fun it must have been to put it all together. I’ve always had “challenges” to overcome each time I re-organize after a move (such as old or poorly thought through spaces)…but in a house you chose yourself…I can’t imagine how exciting! I love the rainbow colors…and can’t believe how much stuff you have…I want to shop your closet! Also, I didn’t know you were a nurse also!? What’s your specialty?

  19. Toni says:

Amy, I started out as a cardiac Nurse on the open heart unit, then moved to sub acute (post surgical)… LOVE!

  20. Paula Lauer says:

What kind of shelving did you use?

  21. Toni-Wonderful. I worked as a Perinatal High Risk Nurse (along with regular Postpartum) for a few years before staying home with my daughter (who’s almost 2). I don’t know how you keep up with it all! Also, where did you live before S.C again? I’m “stuck” in So. Cal for now…which could be worse I suppose 🙂

WOW. Your closet looks beyond amazing.

  23. Lori says:

That is one awesome closet!! I think the matching hangers make such a difference in making the overall look so much cleaner. Great idea with the pegboard!

  24. carol jane says:

Wow girl. Thats awesome! How long did it take you to do all that? My closet is a MESS! You have just given me inspiration to get in there and clean it up! You have some wardrobe going on. Can I go shopping in your jean section? Ha!

  25. The Mom says:

Your pegboard idea is genius! Your whole closet is amazing, but that pegboard is my favorite! The color coordination is a close second though. Don’t mind my drool dripping all over your post! LOL

  26. Sarah Jane says:

WOW! I am so jealous of all the space you have! That is very impressive. I love the color coordination you have going on, that is something I always HAVE to do! I also really liked your idea of the peg board for your purses and accessories, you can see all them so perfectly and it looks nice too! Great job! Can’t wait for September 1!!

  27. schwadette says:

all i can say is that i LOVE your closet… but might love your kelley green TOMS even more! 🙂

  28. Jen says:

I absolutely love your closet…mine is very similar in size. 🙂 I think the peg board idea was genius. I would make one suggestion only and that is for your shoe file, that you hang it with 3m hooks, the reason is that when you open and shut the door going in and out you will find that the over the door hooks move around and fall off somtimes. if you use the 3m hooks they will stay put. 🙂 I recommend that to my customers through Clever Container. Once again..amazing job! http://www.mycleverbiz.com/jkagan

  29. leaca says:

    Wow. That looks great.

Hi Toni, I got some serious closet envy!!!! You did a fabulous job! Congrats on the new house, it is breathtaking! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and I absolutely love it and look forward to every post!

Holy organized Batman! But truthfully, you lost me at the picture of the LV bag. Drool!!

  32. I’m just so impressed by all the color and the organization. Plus you have an awesome number of jeans and flipflops, might just have to pin this to prove to my husband that 3 pairs of jeans is not enough:) Although to be fair, I do have 3 pairs in a wide variety of sizes for pre-baby, pregnant, post-baby, almost-back-to-pre-baby-size, then pre-baby-size-but-now-it’s-a-new-season…

  34. Colleen says:

I love it Toni, I have been meaning to come on here after I saw your sneak peeks on IG. (side note: why doesn’t Internet Explorer work?). Anyway, it looks so good in here. I love the necklace holders!

  35. Very nice. My goodness, you have a lot of flip flops! And that’s a nice closet! I wish I had that much space. I will say that my closet is perhaps one of the the most organized spaces in my house… and no one sees it. Sigh. Looking forward to your 14 week program!

  36. Unknown says:

I looked through the photos with my own closet in mind and was wondering, I see no full length hangers with dresses in your closet! I have many and have to work around that in arranging my very small walk in. I like how you have a row of hangers up high, then your shoe boxes, and then another low row of hangers. I might try this myself. Another comment asked about scarves….I am trying to decide a better system for myself with my scarves also.Do you have any?

  37. HOLY jeans and flip flops! I was rather overwhelmed by that collection. Goodwill time? 🙂

  38. Toni says:

I have my full length dresses below my louis vuitton purse. I must have forgotten to share a picture of them. Also, I dont have an scarfs (well I do but my 14yr old has them all)… so I cannot help with that one. I did see some scarf organizers at bed, bath, and beyond. 🙂

  39. Peggy says:

It’s great that you have this big, huge closet to work with, but what would be actually helpful is to show us with vet small closets (that many of have to share with our spouses) how to make a small amount of room work efficiently. You have great ideas and no offense, but I could be much more organized too if I had that much space to work with.

  40. Mom to One says:

Your closet is HUGE! Ours isn’t nearly as big and wow – I wish I owned that many jeans 🙂

I’d love to hear thoughts from others on organizing on a dime (or less). I love the storage containers, Container Store, Bed Bath Beyond – ahh, they all make me drool. However, it would make my pocketbook much happier to upcycle or recycle to get the same effect. Thoughts anyone?

All I can think to say is WOW!!! Will you come make over my whole house for me?!! Your closet looks amazing! and it’s soooo huge!! Lucky you! Great job!:)

  43. Hm. What kind of closet organizer do you have? I have a rubbermaid system, but I’d like t have the shelves like you have for the decorate boxes….wonder how I can accomplish that?

  44. Maureen says:

This is amazing – you did an incredible job! I picked this as one of My Friday Favorites – you can check it out here: http://wp.me/p2hp9V-Dp

  45. I have closet enby! You’ve done a beautiful job with it. I wanted to share with you how I hand my sweaters in my small, dark closet. http://organized31.blogspot.com/2012/10/best-way-to-hang-up-your-sweaters.html.

  46. Laura Hayrapetyan says:

Can you tell me how you made your husbands drawers. I found the wire basket system on Ikea’s website but not the counter top part. I LOVE your closet! Thanks for sharing!

  47. Leslie says:

OK question about the peg board – how did you hang it? I’m planning on getting on next week for my closet! Great closet! Great tips. I love organizing!!

    • Admin says:

We used furring strips??? ABout 2″x2″ across the top middle and bottom of the wall. Then we screwed in the peg board.:)

  48. Lauren B says:

I would love for you to find a good way to organize tights! I have at least 70 pairs. I have them in a big Tupperware drawer right now. I attempted to roll them, but I can never find the pair I need so they eventually become one big mess.

  49. We love how great your closet functions!
