An Organized Dressing Table

May 29, 2014

Every mom should have their own little space where they can retreat away from their family and relax. For me, this area is my dressing table in our bedroom.

I find putting my makeup on each morning to be really calming. I have to focus on what I am doing and let go of the million other things I have on my mind at that time of day. Having this time to myself each morning helps to clear my head and put me in a better frame of mind for the new day.

I like to keep the top of my dressing table nice and clear as possible. I have a couple of boxes which I use to store jewelery I use regularly, a little dish to put my rings in when I take them off, a jar with my make up brushes, and a few pretty accessories.

To keep my dressing table nice and clean, I give it a quick wipe over with a microfibre cloth each day when I finish doing my hair and makeup.

Our bedroom is very neutral tones, grey, black, white and silver, so I wanted to give the drawers a pop of color to cheer things up a little. I found this gorgeous wrapping paper at a discount store to line the drawers with.

In the center drawer, I keep my hair appliances. I drilled a hole in the back of the drawer so I could put a power board into the drawer. I attached it to the side with Velcro to make it easy to access. Having the power board in the drawer makes it really quick and easy to plug in, use and put away my hair appliances, and because it is in the drawer, it means I don’t have cords all over the place. I can just shut the drawer and everything is hidden.

I wanted to make sure the drawer would be okay to tolerate the heat from my straightener and curling iron. I found a silicone cookie sheet to place in the bottom of the drawer to put my appliances on when they are hot.

When not in use, I wrap the cords around each appliance and put them at the back of the drawer. In this drawer, I also have 3 small containers for hair elastics and bobby pins.

In the top drawer on the right hand side, I keep my every day makeup. My makeup caddy that I shared last year is still working really well. It usually stays in the drawer while I do my makeup however having it in a caddy means if I need to relocate to the bathroom it is really easy to carry everything. At the back of this drawer I have 2 acrylic containers with cotton pads and cotton buds.

The next drawer down has the makeup I don’t use regularly. I have foundation, eyeliners, eyeshadow and bronzer that I use for special occasions. I have it divided into 4 containers so it is easy to see what I have.

In the bottom drawer I keep my costume jewelery. I am not a huge jewelery person and tend to wear the same few pieces each day however I like to have lots of options to wear when going out or for special occasions. In this drawer I have rings, earrings, necklaces, bangles, brooches, hair accessories and head bands which are divided up into different containers.

On the left hand side of my dressing table there is another three drawers. In the top drawer I keep my hair styling products. I have a divider in the front of the drawer for hair clips, comb and small products. My large product sprays and bottles are lined up at the back of the drawer.

My skin care drawer is the same layout as my hair care drawer. I have a divider at the front of the drawer for small products, and the larger bottles and tubes lined up at the back.

In the bottom drawer I keep my manicure kit. I have another caddy the same as my makeup caddy which I use to store nail polish, nail polish remover, hand cream, cotton pads, nail files and manicure tools. Having all my supplies in a caddy means it is easy to take them where ever I want to sit and do my nails.

At the back of the bottom drawer, I have my travel makeup bag which holds all my travel sized products ready for our next trip away.

I love having all my beauty products organized in one place, and having my own little area to escape to. When everything is nice and organized it makes my morning beauty routine even more calming. Do you find your beauty routine relaxing or a bit of a chore? I would love to know how you store your beauty supplies.

I just made myself a vanity for my room. I was getting a little tired of standing over the bathroom counter to apply my makeup. To be honest, doing that for 25yrs I didn’t know any different. My space is small so I was on the hunt for a smaller desk and came across the Micke desk at Goodwill for $15..score. It was soooo beat up I wasn’t to sure, but once i got it home i painted it white, added a mirror to the top and organized. I am so happy with the way it turned out. I still keep my hair products in the bathroom. I dont like the thought of hair all over my bedroom and my nail polish collection is a little crazy (my daughter and i enjoy them) But, i have to say… my makeup has never looked better πŸ˜€
I recently did a huge purge of all the bathroom drawers and reorganized, so happy with all of it.
Love your vanity and thank you for sharing πŸ™‚

    • Thank you for your comment Lisa πŸ™‚ I love finding second hand furniture and re-purposing it. Sounds like you got yourself a bargain, I am glad it is working well for you πŸ™‚

    • Hi Kim, Thank you for you lovely comment πŸ™‚ I am from Australia so you may not be able to find the same containers however they were all from a dollar store here. The make up and manicure caddy’s are from Howard’s Storage World. Thanks πŸ™‚

Love your idea with the power board inside the drawer Jess. Definitely a great way to keep all the hair styling appliances neat & tidy!! I may have to do some modifications of my own now!! : )

    • Thanks Sheree πŸ™‚ My dad made me a dressing table with a power board in the drawer when I was a teen so I can’t really take credit for that one πŸ™‚ It is fantastic for keeping everything nice and tidy.

Hi Jessica! I just love ABFOL! I love your dressing table. I have a similar one. One thing I did when I no longer needed my children’s changing table (I see the baby picture on your dressing table) is to relocate it to my closet. Now I have several drawers and the dresser top to keep jewelry. I use the kind with lined trays and various sized cubbies depending on the jewelry. Then I use the other drawers for my workout gear and pj’s. I love how you lined the drawers of your dressing table. That’s on my to do list now!

    • This is a fantastic idea Daria. My daughter has a gorgeous chest of drawers in her room, I may just relocate it when we are finished using the change table part πŸ™‚

Love your dressing table & how organized everything is! Beautiful job. I would love to just borrow you for a few months of organizing & sorting of my home. I always have the best intentions but then the job becomes overwhelming:( Thought of hiring someone but then the cost comes into play;)

    • I would love to come and help you Penny πŸ˜‰ Try to not do too much at once, start by committing to 15 minutes de-cluttering each day. Grab a garbage bag and toss any garbage you find, put stuff to donate in another bag. You will be amazed by the difference just a week will make. Remember, you can’t organize clutter! You need to get rid of all the excess first. I hope this helps πŸ™‚

You have everything so beautifully and practically organized! And I love that dressing table, it’s so unique. Is that a usual furniture style in Australia? Im in Tennessee, U.S. and I’ve never seen anything like it.

My dressing table is the messiest of all because I fail to put things in place. But this is motivating! I think high time now I should also make a move in organizing it. Thanks for sharing inspiration.
