Home Organization 101 Challenge Week 7: The Master Closet

February 20, 2016

Home Organization Challenge

Welcome to week 7 of A Bowl Full of Lemons 14 Week Organizing Challenge. This week we are headed into our master closets.  Don’t be scared. You can do it! Closet space is precious and you don’t want to waste space on things you don’t use, so if you haven’t worn clothing in the last year, it might be a good idea to purge. Have a great week organizing!

ORGANIZING INSPIRATION

Here are several blog posts that will inspire you to get your Master Closets organized.

THE ORGANIZING PROCESS

Prepare: Gather 8 bins or boxes, one for each of the following.
  • Keep: Current Season
  • Keep: Out of season
  • Donate
  • Sell
  • Trash/Recycle
  • Other Room
  • Shoes
  • Accessories
Sort:
  • Sort through everything in the closet.  Empty it completely as you go. Divide everything into the 8 bins listed above (or more if needed).  Purge the items you no longer want, wear or need.  Get rid of as much clutter as you can.
Clean:
  • Vacuum or mop the floor
  • Wipe down door, baseboards, doorknobs and switch plates
  • Wipe down shelving
  • Dust lights

Organize:  It’s time to go through everything in the bins. Put the “other room” items where they belong. Toss the trash in the trash can outside. Place donations in your car and “to sell” items in the garage.  When organizing things in the bins, remove one item at a time, categorizing as you go. Hang like items together and place out of season items in a rubbermaid tote. Label the box “Jane: Out of season” and place up high on the closet shelf.

  • Short Sleeve
  • Long Sleeve
  • Sweaters (best if folded)
  • Pants/Jeans
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Shorts
  • Purses/Bags
  • Belts
  • Shoes

On your old closet setup you had a shoe shelf between your two hanging bars. To you remember the heights you had the bars hung. I would love to do that but my lower bar is already too high and doesn’t leave room for the clothes on the upper bar.

  2. Kimberly Allsup says:

    Dear Toni,

Don’t you find wooden hangers “bulky”? I just switched all of mine from the wooden to the non-slip type from Costco. They take up less space in my tiny closet…10.00 for 35 hangers- a great deal!

  3. Bambi says:

I absolutely love the out of season clothes up high on the top shelf. Such a great use of that hard to reach space. I also love having them in the closet rather than in a tote in the attic. I’m leaving inspired as usual. Thanks Toni!

  4. Melissa says:

I know you use the “Kon Marie” method, but don’t all of those clothes get wrinkled from being rolled up?

  5. Sarah Barnard says:

I’m excited to go organize my closet!! Thanks!

  6. Dan Black says:

Hi Toni, awesome post with a lot of great advice. I didn’t realise how difficult the ‘purge’ was going to be until we started. Me and my Wife have got major envy over your closet, we wish we had that kind of room! Were actually revamping our bedroom completely so were just deciding how to maximise our closet space to make the organisation a little less painful!

  7. Chastity says:

I was wondering where I could purchase the closet shelving system like you have in your master closet

  8. Dawn says:

Sidebar: Is there a place on here where you review Tieks? I’m really thinking about purchasing a pair, and would love to here what you think about them.
