2017 Home Organization Challenge Week 7: Master Closet

February 18, 2017

Welcome to week 7 of A Bowl Full of Lemons 2017 Organizing Challenge. This week we are cleaning out and organizing our master closets. Purge as much as you can this week. If you haven’t worn clothing in the last year, it might be a good idea to donate it.  Closet space is precious and you don’t want to waste space on things you don’t use.  Have a great week organizing!

If you’re new to the challenge, print out the schedule and checklists below and begin on the current week. For encouragement, join our Home Organization Facebook community to share your progress, or struggles, or questions. Or simply look through the photos and read how others are doing.

WEEK : THE MASTER CLOSET

We all have different sizes and layouts when it comes to the master closet. Some people have a hundred pairs of shoes and some have only two.  Your situation is unique and you must organize it to fit your needs. The goal is to purge your things, simplify the space, and organize the rest.

THE ORGANIZING PROCESS

Prepare: Gather 8 bins or boxes, one for each of the following.
  • Keep: Current Season
  • Keep: Out of season
  • Donate
  • Sell
  • Trash/Recycle
  • Other Room
  • Shoes
  • Accessories
Sort:
  • Sort through everything in the closet.  Empty it completely as you go. Divide everything into the 8 bins listed above (or more if needed).  Purge the items you no longer want, wear or need.  Get rid of as much clutter as you can.
Clean:
  • Vacuum or mop the floor
  • Wipe down door, baseboards, doorknobs and switch plates
  • Wipe down shelving
  • Dust lights

Organize:  It’s time to go through everything in the bins. Put the “other room” items where they belong. Toss the trash in the trash can outside. Place donations in your car and “to sell” items in the garage.  When organizing things in the bins, remove one item at a time, categorizing as you go. Hang like items together and place out of season items in a rubbermaid tote. Label the box “Jane: Out of season” and place up high on the closet shelf.

  • Short Sleeve
  • Long Sleeve
  • Sweaters (best if folded)
  • Pants/Jeans
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Shorts
  • Purses/Bags
  • Belts
  • Shoes

  1. Your closet it stunning! I love the different categories for the bins! Usually I just have 3 categories — Keep, Donate, and Trash. I’ve already purged my closet for the beginning of the year, but I will definitely keep these in mind. I do another purge at the end of summer, too. That’s when I switch over to my warmer clothes, so I find it helpful to do one each season. 😀

I have your first book and absolutely LOVE IT! It’s been a long time since I read it, but I’ve been thinking about getting it out again to read again and re-center my organization. Have a lovely weekend!

    Beautiful!
I love the plastic bins for your shoes. That’s something I definitely need to mimic.
Oh, and that powder blue purse would look just perfect in MY closet! 😉

  3. Courtney says:

Where did you put all of your sweaters? Are in they in the bins on top?

  4. Karen says:

    Getting started tomorrow!!

  5. Priya says:

Wow.. so neatly organized. Love the closet! I was wondering where do you organize the suitcases and other luggage. I tried searching the blog but couldn’t find. I am trying to find a good place to keep them in my home. Thanks in advance!
